How this site is made.

About this site

The site's look borrows lightly from National Park posters and a field geologist's notebook: the colors of rock, dry grass and kraft paper, arched windows, and small stamped labels. Research and publications are kept plainer, so the science reads first.

Accessibility

The site aims to meet the WCAG 2.2 accessibility guidelines at level AA. Its colors are measured, not judged by eye, so text stays readable against every background, including the oat panels and the faded photos behind page titles. Every page works with a keyboard alone, starting with a link that skips past the menu to the content.

Photos are described for screen readers, apart from the faded backgrounds, which are decorative and left out. Page transitions and other motion switch off when your device is set to reduce motion.

Each update to the site is checked automatically, but automated checks catch only some problems.

If something is hard to read or use, please let us know.
